Nafplion (Greece)

Sunset walks, ancient fortresses and elegant Venetian charm – find romance in Greece’s most romantic town.

Nafplion city, where fortresses guard centuries of history

Approaching Nafplion, Greece by sea, its mighty fortresses emerge from the distant hills all around you. A rocky islet housing the smallest fortress, Bourtzi, makes its presence known as you pass by, but stepping off the cruise ship will reveal an elegant town sprinkled with ancient monuments, relaxing squares and pretty places.

Walking around you’ll be able to sense its Frankish, Venetian and Ottoman influences through mansions, fountains and castles. But aside from its turbulent history, Naflpion also has a softer side: beautiful seafront promenades and bustling quayside cafes where you’ll be able to while away the hours watching the sun shimmer off the Argolic Gulf.

Outside the city, miles and miles of vineyards in and around Nemea decorate rolling hills to produce some of Greece’s best known wine. Wine connoisseurs will delight in wine from a region that has been making it since antiquity, or those in search of more history can visit the nearby archaeological site, Mycenae. Heading back into the center of Nafplion, there’s no shortage of museums, walks and monuments to discover.

Comfortably accessible on foot, the old town of Nafplion features a dazzling amount of historical sites within such as small concentrated area. Starting from Syntagma Square, the heart of the town, it seems as if time has stood still; neoclassical mansions ooze sophistication and Palamidi fortress towers high above to reveal panoramic vistas over the rooftops, bright blue gulf and surrounding hills. Continue along cobbled streets to the Church of Agios Spyridon and Church of Agios Gerorgios to admire their intricate murals.

Considered one of the purest masterpieces in Greek architecture, the Ancient Theater of Epidaurus is simply spectacular. The perfectly preserved amphitheater is still used for concerts and festivals every year due to its unbeatable acoustics, and the Sanctuary of Epidaurus, an ancient therapeutic and religious center, is just a short distance away.
