Split (Croatia)

A dramatic and impressive setting, its coastal mountains are the perfect backdrop to the turquoise waters of the Adriatic.

One of the world’s most important and impressive Roman monuments.

The Venetian theme pops up again as we arrive in Split, the second city of Croatia. It was once a heavily fortified outpost of the Venetian City State, completely surrounded by the Ottoman Empire. Split is always vibrant and buzzing but is also in part, a UNESCO World Heritage Site which includes the awe-inspiring Diocletian’s Palace, one of the world’s most important and impressive Roman monuments. Split’ dramatic setting is impressive to say the least - its coastal mountains are the perfect backdrop to the turquoise waters of the Adriatic. Our visit here includes a complimentary walking tour to explore the city’s historic heart.

Klis Fortress, an ancient stronghold built upon stone cliffs atop of the City of Split, a structure that has been the epicenter to some of Croatia’s most legendary struggles throughout history. In recent years, KlisFortress has found a new role: as the perfect filming location for Danaerys’s stronghold.

As opposed to busy Split, it seems that time has stood still in Solin, the site of the ancient Salona. At the time of its greatest prosperity (3rd and 4th century), Salona had circa 40, 000 inhabitants while Split did not even exist. Archaeologists have excavated remains of temples, amphitheaters, early Christian churches, burial grounds and baths.
